Ancillary Task 2 - Film Poster

Our task for the Ancillary task two is to create a film poster using software photoshop. To get an idea of what a particular film poster would like we have researched different existing film posters to see what they look like. We considered which characters were on the posters and we looked at the different colours and themes of it. Here are a few examples of existing film posters which we have deconstructed.

Deconstruction of Existing Film Posters

The first one in which I deconstructed was the film 'P.S. I Love You' starring Gerard Butler and Hilary Swank.

Flat Plan of our Draft Film Poster

Before we could start constructing our film poster, we had to complete a floor plan of the poster, to get an idea of what it would look like.

Software training and Evidence of construction

For the background of our film poster we want it to be the same effect as it appears on the Time Traveler's Wife Poster. the effect that is used on the poster is a Bokeh effect. So to help us with this we used a tutorial which explains how to do this.

So here is how we have done with the background of the film poster:

As you can see here, this background theme is similar to that of the film poster of the film Time Traveler's Wife.

We need to make up a mock up of the credits at the bottom so we can re-create a poster. In order to do this we use a steel tongs effect to create something that looks like this:

This credit block however, was taken from a major picture so we don't have that many credits in our film. But, we will have enough, with some of the names being totally made up.

Provided by the website was a character map in which we used at first to download the font. This was inaccurate and we ended up having to find the characters ourselves.

Here is an example of constructing part of the poster. In this photo you can clearly see that Ryma's ear is sticking out through her hair, when we shot it. We all decided that we should cover this up to not make it look odd. We covered this up using the cloning tool provided in photoshop. Here is the original version of the photo compared to the version in photoshop when we edited it.

Draft Poster

So here is our draft version of our film poster:

We exhibited to the rest of our media class. Here is their reaction:

Evaluation of feedback

Here are some of the key comments and what we thought of them.

"Make Alex a little more darker so it becomes more clear that Kris is meant to be see through (transparent)"-We are going to make Alex darker and Kris a little more lighter and transparent, so the audience can understand the story.

"There's no slogan"-As a production team we came up with a slogan which was 'Who said romance is dead' but it had already been used in an exisiting product. We struggled to come up with another one.

"Bring the text at the bottom down a bit more"-As the text is overlapping the purple box and coming into the picture, we are going to bring the text down more so that it is the purple box.

"The photo looks photoshoped"-This was a major comment in which we all agreed with. As we don't want to ruin the look of the photo, we will go over it again to stop it from looking photoshoped.

"The size of the text for the web address looks too big" - To sort this we will decrease the size of the text of the website to stop it from looking odd. Also, we will re-size the rest of the text on the poster.

Overall - We are all satisfied with the feedback we received. There are a few improvements which we have got to make.

Final Product

Here is our final version of the film poster.

With this poster we have made a few changes and improvements. Firstly, the most obvious change is that we now only have two of the characters on the poster. We all decided to change this as these two characters are the two main characters of the film, whereas the character Alex is only a supporting character, as he only appears at the end of the film. Also, another change we have made to this poster as you can clearly see is the colour of the background at the bottom, we have changed the colour to black instead of having the purple at the bottom. With this background we also blended the bottoms of the characters in with the background. The colour of the black represents a mystery, so we thought that doing this would be a great effect.

Deconstruction of our own film poster

As well as deconstructing other existing film posters I also deconstructed our own film poster.
