Shooting on Location - 5th December 2014

Location-Mallory's House (Charlotte Billingham's House)

So today was our first day filming on location. In our first filming session we were filming inside rather than filming outside due to the weather being rather damn and dull for filming.

The scenes we began filming were scenes 1, 5 and 6. All of these scenes are all set in the different rooms of Mallory's house. We firstly began with some of the most easiest shots which were Ryma (Mallory putting the kettle on), pouring Tea and making her toast. As we were still in the house we thought we might as well film scene 5 even though it occurs a lot later in the film, so therefore we didn't film everything in order. Scene 5 was filmed in the Lounge/Diner, and it involves Mallory finding out that the mystery guy she met called Peter Redrum is actually dead.

To make it easier for our actor Ryma to act out out what she had to do, we went through the script and movements with her so she knew what she was doing before we filmed her performing. We also made sure that focusing on the cameras was working and the quality was very good, so that the shots would be in focus. Instead of using recorded sound from the camera, we recorded the dialogue separately on a location recording kit to the camera but at the same time so the dialogue was in sync with the video.

Now we all moved upstairs to film the two versions of the morning routine of Mallory, so this included her waking up, and getting dressed. We will re-use some of the shots in both scene 1 and 6 like her waking up and opening the cupboard etc. The only difference in between each different morning routine sequence was the difference in colour of Malory's dress, and the different way she does her hair. Before we just went straight into filming this, we went through it with Ryma (Malory) practising and directing her on what exactly she had to do, we did some practise filming and filmed from lots of different shots. The reason we did this was that it allowed us to see what angles would look best. All of us thought that the shots we filmed was really good and the quality of the shots was very good, we also thought that the shots was very well framed and focused.

Overall

Our first session went very good overall and we got everything we needed to film done to what we believed was a high good quality standard with accurate framing of the shots with only a few continuity errors. Our actor Ryma played her role really well by bringing out the character's emotions and attitudes to life perfectly. The range of shots was limiting within the room as it wasn't designed to fit 4 crew members an actress and a lot of camera equipment but we made good use of the space with varied angles and shot types.

Although we had some positives there were a few cons with our filming session. When we checked the footage closely we did have a few continuity errors such as the camera crews image appearing in the mirrored wardrobes when Ryma opened them so something would need to be corrected about this. There were a few artificial lighting issues but this was soon solved by turning all lights on in the room and if necessary we could correct the light within the editing.
